Squarespace for iPhone v1.2

Hot on the heels of our Android release, Squarespace for iPhone v1.2 is available for download. The most important thing we tackled in this update is vastly improved stability. We've rebuilt the app on an entirely new framework. Those pesky crashes? Gone. While we were at it, we added a number of features, including a few notable items:

  • Markup Editor: A new markup editor to the post creator gives you greater control over your content. Now you can choose the editing mode (Text, HTML, Textile, and Markdown) for posts on an individual basis while composing your drafts.
  • Updated UI: The user interface has been fine-tuned, including new images, icons, and animations throughout the app.
  • Sounds: We added sounds as you navigate, enhancing the overall experience. You can turn the sounds on (they're off by default) in the Accounts settings within the app.

You can download the update from the iTunes App Store now. As always, if you have any questions regarding the app just let our support team know.

Enjoy!

How Do You Squarespace? fresh365

Erin Wolczik's delectable site blipped across our radar just days before she gave birth to her son, and somehow she still managed to find time to answer a few of our questions. In talking to her, it quickly became obvious that she's the type to tackle all kinds of interesting challenges. Her food and photography blog, fresh365, does just that, combining several of her loves into an elegant site.

A print designer by training, Erin was constantly at her computer looking for inspiration -- and also a way to organize all of her recipes. Add a passion for photography to her design and gustatory interests, and starting a food blog was the perfect way for her to get all of her hobbies into one format.

Since the food blogging world is known to be incredibly active but also one of high standards, Erin admits she has set her own bar rather high for what goes on her blog. Most important to her is making sure the recipes work and the photography keeps the food enticing. "This has been great for cataloging the recipes with images, which is so important to me as a visual person." She definitely gets the job done, as her photography makes every recipe look utterly delicious.

In a nutshell, what's your background and how did you get to where you are?

I graduated with a degree in graphic design in 2002, and have worked mainly in print since then, with a focus in the stationery industry for the past 6 years. Over the past 4 years I have become very interested in photography as well. Cooking has become a hobby of mine, as I love to be creative and play around with ingredients.

Are you and your family all vegetarian? What are some of the bigger challenges about that kind of cooking?

I became a vegetarian a few years ago, so all my recipes are vegetarian. While I am constantly playing with ingredients, my husband (and the rest of my family and friends) are not vegetarian, so I like to come up with dishes that will satisfy everyone. That is often a challenge -- but a tasty one!

Savory or sweet?

Both! But if I had to choose sides, I am more of a salt person.

What are your favorite inspiration sources?

Ooh everything! While I am inspired by many, many blogs and magazines I also find inspiration in day-to-day life. The changing seasons and the simplicity of a fresh ingredient are such great inspiration in my kitchen.

Why does Squarespace work for you? What's your favorite feature?

I have been using Squarespace for a year and half, after I followed a link from a blog I read (of course I can't remember which one now...). Squarespace was the perfect fit for me as I wanted total control over the look, but without the hassle of coding. Overall I love the interface, especially being able to see comments, traffic stats, etc., in such an organized space.

What's next for you (besides having a baby...)?

I have joined a CSA for the past four years, in which I receive a weekly harvest of fresh produce from a local farm. Which makes summer my favorite time of year. It is like someone is going shopping for me each week-- such a fun surprise! So, I am hoping to get back in the kitchen very soon and share some simple recipes. I am also looking to devote more time to photography in the coming months, as well.

New Template: Blueprint

Browse through the templates in your Style Editor and you'll find our newest offering: Blueprint.

Blueprint was designed by Senior Designer Stephen Parker to be a new starting point for a modern website. To get there, Stephen explored color schemes, proportions, and shapes and forms of text. For an extra-polished look, Blueprint boasts some subtle-but-cutting-edge improvements like CSS transitions and image-width calculations to make the experience seamless for customers.

Blueprint has five unique styles to make sure there is something for everyone. It's also the first template to come with equal column height for both main content and sidebars, so your columns will always align at the bottom. "Templates in the future will benefit from the work done in Blueprint," Stephen says. "And there's a lot of incredible new design on the way."

Since it was created to be a new starting point, Blueprint is now our default template for new customers, a crucial component in our freshly redesigned onboarding experience. This new experience includes a helpful tutorial of our editing modes that gets new customers started on their sites quickly. Current customers have the full benefit of the new tutorial too — just click on the Help icon in your menu bar while logged in to see the updated Help features.

To try Blueprint on for size, just follow this guide to switching templates. We hope you enjoy!

Introducing Squarespace for Android

Our family of handmade mobile apps has just gotten a little larger. We're thrilled to introduce Squarespace for Android, which brings all the mobile benefits our iPhone and iPad customers have been enjoying to those on Android devices. The new Squarespace for Android is available for immediate download.

Just like our other mobile apps, Squarespace for Android has a custom interface and delivers all the functionality our customers need to manage their Squarespace sites on-the-go. The main features include:

  • Posting - Quickly create new blog posts. All of your current tags and categories will be there. You can also post photos to your site. Snap a picture right from the app, or add one from your library.
  • Content Management - See all your blog posts right from the app. You can edit drafts, delete posts and preview posts with ease.
  • Comment Management - Approve new comments, reply back, or mark them as spam. You can also receive push notifications for new comments and those awaiting moderation.
  • Multiple Account Management - Your "Accounts" setting allows you to manage content for multiple Squarespace sites. You can save a draft post for one site and then easily jump to another site to schedule a post for later in the day.
  • Real-Time Statistics - You can now view your Squarespace site statistics right from the application's statistics tab.  Unique visits, page views, popular search terms, RSS subscribers and top referrers are all included.
  • Live Site Preview - See your whole site in the flesh, not just single posts.

It's all the best parts of using Squarespace right in your pocket. We hope you enjoy Squarespace for Android!
