While Squarespace doesn't offer free accounts of any kind anymore, it's 14 day free trial period is probably one of the main contributing factors in its success as it gives the potential customer the opportunity to "try before you buy" and experience the simplicity of the system first hand without even having to enter a credit card number.
Squarespace's 14 day trial was definitely the main factor in my purchase. Once I started the trial, I absolutely loved the site I created. Originally I did not plan to keep the account past the trial period, but once I realized how easy it was to operate I couldn't depart from it.
I have and would definitely recommend it to anyone starting a website with very little site building experience and/or money.
I had originally planned to host my site on mobileme using iWeb as a means by which to create & publish the site. In the end, there were too many things I wanted to customise that were too much hassle with iWeb. Although it has more storage, traffic, and other things like that, it isn't nearly as "usable" as SS. I wouldn't have discovered that ease of use if it weren't for the trial, and it is something worth paying a little extra for.
